Heei moi, I’m Tatu Lehtisyrjä, and I have been a part of the KY’s executive board this year.
My responsibilities have been Premises, Alumni, and Community. Here, I will tell you about
these roles and why you should apply for them.
Let me start by saying that the KY board year has been one of the best years of my life. It
has sometimes been demanding, but it has still given me much more than it has taken. I
have had countless opportunities to impact KY’s future in various ways, along with the
chance to meet people I might have never met otherwise.
That being said, the Premises role has been my main focus this year. The new KY building
is looming on the horizon and it’s a unique project, unlike anything I will likely ever be a part
of again. All the different meetings, house tours, and hours spent individually to advance the
project have been my main responsibility and one of the coolest things during the year. The
KY building will be the home of KY for decades to come, and the project won’t be over after
this year. This is a great opportunity to leave your mark on KY’s history.
In addition to the future KY building, the Premises responsible works on making our other
venues the best they can be. This takes the form of both renovations and maintenance, but
also through innovating ways to make the spaces more functional for all our users.
Alumni affairs, on the other hand, are a work in progress, and there are always possibilities
for improvement. The new supporting membership system has received a lot of positive
feedback from alumni, and it provides a straightforward path to building closer relationships
with them. The Alumni affairs role has also given me the opportunity to actually meet our
alumni and, through several meetings, figure out how to keep developing this sector.
Ultimately, it is a role where you have the chance to meet interesting people and figure out
how to provide those same opportunities to a wider range of our members.
Community is a role I have been involved with for three years now, across different
committees and sections under both KY and AYY. It’s a role that might sometimes feel
frustrating, but it gives back exactly as much effort as you put into it. The idea of this role on
the KY board is to bring KY as a whole closer to our stakeholders, for example, within AYY
or other business schools in Finland. At the same time, there is a lot to be done inside KY to
bring people together and create a sense of belonging for all our members. This is a process
that will never be completely finished, but it is incredibly rewarding to work on.
That is a short description of my official responsibilities on the KY board. In addition to these,
there are many other experiences included in a board member's role. One of my favorite
examples is the annual balls you have the opportunity to attend. They provide an interesting
insight into different student cultures across Finland. They are also a nice getaway from
everyday life in Espilä.
Finally, I want to remind you that these roles do not require any prior experience, and you
will learn a lot during the year.
If you are interested in anything regarding the KY board, feel free to reach out and let's talk!
